Uglich

Uglich is a regional town, municipal center. It is situated 100 km east from Yaroslavl and 230 km north from Moscow. Thanks to its ancient history, unique position, unforgettable exhibits of Uglich museums the town ranks high among the most famous historical Russian towns. Watches, cheese, mineral water manufactured in Uglich intensify the fame of the town. Uglich was founded in 937 by a relative of grand duchess Olga - Ian Pleskovitch. In 1148 the town was first mentioned in the Ipat’evsky notes “Uglichee field”. 

In 1218 Uglich became the capital of the apanage principality which from 1326 was subordinate to Ivan Kalita, Moscow Prince. In the XVth century there were own chased coins, chronicles, rewriting of books, building of stone cathedrals and towers. On May XVth, 1591 in the Uglich Kremlin under the mysterious circumstances was killed the last offspring of the ruling dynasty – tsarevitch Dmitry. This fact led to the beginning of the so-called “Troubled times”. In 1610– 1611 the town was destroyed and only from the second half of the XVII century building and development continued here again.

During the reign of Catherine the Second Uglich became a district center and the empress affirmed a regular plan of its building. Even up to the present days the buildings erected in the epoch of classicism in combination with the monuments of temple architecture which gathered like rays in the center of the town and open a beautiful panorama of the Kremlin create a unique image of Uglich. Among the masterpieces of Russian architecture in Uglich can be mentioned the Assumption church, the ensemble of the Uglich Kremlin.

Nowadays 17 museums and exhibitions function in Uglich. Among them one of the oldest provincial museums of Russia – the Uglich Museum of History and Art, with its unquestionable pearl – the church of Tsarevitch Dmitry. T he Library of Russian vodka, museum of myths and superstitions , museum of chimes always attract tourist’s attention.
